Chile Struck By Massive Earthquake

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile on Saturday, 27 February 2010, at 3.34 a.m. local time. Some of the places that were hit are Constitucion, Concepcion, Talca and Santiago. But because the epicenter was at an estimated 34km underground in a mostly deserted area, lesser damage was done. Even so, the earthquake violently shook the ground and tore down many buildings. The death toll has already reached above 700 as the search for survivors continues. The earthquake was caused by two converging plates. The South American Plate and the Nazca Plate converge at about 3 inches annually.
